Anonymous sent: What do you use for your art (digital, and if you do traditional) ? I really love your art and how you draw people! :)

Aw geez, thank you so much! :D

Just last year I saved up and bought myself a fancy cintiq! It’s my baby and a lot of fun, but not at all a necessity. I use photoshop for the majority of my pictures, but my mermaid storyboard was done in sketchbook pro (which I find more convenient for storyboarding).

I do draw traditionally but I don’t upload a lot of that here… nothing special there, I use a pentel brush, some microns, copics for splashes of color. Haha, I wish I had more exciting answers! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Doing a little bit of spring cleaning on that spell book! After all, just because it’s an old spell doesn’t necessarily mean its a good one.

Anonymous sent: Just saw your mermaid storyboard and oh my gosh!! Please get into animation or comics or something, I need to see more of these lovely girls! xx

:D Aaah thank you so much!! I love animation and comics, but I’m not sure i’ll have time to whip up anything anytime soon. But maybe one day? I think it’d be a fun way to approach a comic. I’m a sucker for kid heroes and I have ideas swirling in my head.

Sorry for the long post! Little storyboard I wanted to do, involving modern diner mermaids.

Hey guys! It’s been awhile, I know. My contract kept me plenty busy but its over now.
Have a speedpaint.

I just was responding to a text message I got that said that one of my friends that attended CTN expo felt so inadequate compared to other artists there that they did not want to show their portfolio to anyone.

The first thing I typed was: Yeah dude, there are amazing people out there. We know that. This industry is so tense and hardcore sometimes.

I sent this, then paused and thought. It was tense… and I could understand how being at this huge convention surrounded by artists who all have the same goal… to make it in the industry- to get bigger and better and achieve their dreams… could make you feel depressed and self conscious. There are people more dedicated then you with more time, more talent, easy means to practice their craft, all going for the same thing you’re going for. If that wasn’t bad enough, we as artists stand there in the midst of all these other artists and compare. We silently chastise ourselves for not being good enough, or we begrudgingly admire other peoples work with shading, or depth, or posing… whatever it might be. Whatever they have that we don’t, we want.

I felt awful, and started writing;
Do you ever think about going back to working at Starbucks just so that you could enjoy art again?

Then I stopped, staring at those horrible little words on my cellphone. Why on earth would I say that. Then I stared at myself and began re-evaluating my whole life.

I love drawing, I love art- I love animation. I happen to be in an amazing situation in a beautiful city, where I can sit down every day and draw what comes to my mind. I get to draw whatever I want, I get to create things my way, with my rules, and share them with the world. Why on earth would I say that I don’t enjoy art. Art is my life.

It’s the part where I start to tear myself down over things I can’t control that I don’t like. It’s the part where people with amazing talent feel disheartened and give up because they think they don’t matter, or they’re not good enough- sometimes not just in art, but in general.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Because we’re artists and so we’re perfectionists, yeah, sure, but we’re people to. Everyone compares themselves to other people, everyone feels horrible when they’re compared to something their not, and everyone wants to be perfect.

I erased the message and sent the following;
You have to believe in yourself otherwise no one will…and if you like what you do, great! I want people to like my art but if they don’t, fuck ‘em. You know? That’s the only way to live.

People might tell you you’re not good enough, but in the end does it really matter? If you’re doing what you love, how you love to do it, if you’re having fun and you feel satisfied then you are getting the absolute most out of your experience. You’re improving, you’re growing as a person or artist and you have something a lot of people wish they had. You have confidence in you’re own work. You have happiness, which a lot of people forget is important.

Remember, you could be Walt Disney himself but if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing… whats the point?

You’re YOU. Go be you.
